Cette année, nous sommes heureux d’inclure à notre programmation deux ateliers pratiques de l’Association canadienne des médecins d’urgence (ACMU). Les deux ateliers se dérouleront le mardi 13 novembre 2012 et dureront toute la journée. Ils sont donnés en anglais.

MUSCLUOSKELETAL INJURIES IN ADULT AND CHILDREN

Musculoskeletal injuries are a common and important component in the practice of emergency medicine. The MSK Roadshow will enable physicians to acquire a practical evidence-based approach to the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries in adults and children. Hands-on sessions using knee and shoulder injection models to practice appropriate needle placement are included.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the MSK Roadshow the participant will be able to:

1. Use an organized framework when examining the knee and shoulder joints;

2. Recognize frequently missed fractures/injuries on radiographs;

3. Perform drainage/injection of the shoulder and knee;

4. Manage common dislocations in adults and children;

5. Guide appropriate investigation of the patient with back pain;

6. Manage common pediatric musculoskeletal injuries;

7. Avoid common pitfalls in the management of the hot joint.

RISKY BUSINESS: CLINICAL DECISION MAKING IN EMERGENCY MEDICINE

The emergency department is a unique clinical environment where patients present with a wide variety of illnesses, varying levels of acuity and where there is often pressure to make clinical decisions under less than optimal conditions. As a result, emergency physicians are in a higher risk category than many other medical specialties. This Roadshow is designed to improve physicians' capacity to identify individual and systematic sources of error in the ED. In particular we will focus on how to avoid cognitive/affective errors that lead to delayed or missed diagnosis and how to manage ethical challenges, with the goal of improved patient safety and reduced legal risk. The Roadshow will include case-based lectures and clinical scenarios to enhance learning and clinical performance. Join us at this new and exciting CAEP Roadshow and learn from the experts in clinical decision making and ethics in emergency medicine.

2. Describe specific guidelines and strategies to manage the ethical challenges frequently encountered by emergency physicians;

4. Recognize principal cognitive errors that underlie diagnostic error;

5. Implement specific strategies to identify and avoid common cognitive errors.
